How to Install Acoustic Panels

There are plenty of ways to install acoustic panels, from strong adhesive glues to a good old-fashioned hammer and nail. It entirely depends on the type of panel, the application surface, and whether you want permanent installation.

What are Acoustic Panels and How do they Work?

Acoustic panels are wall panels that modify the way sound behaves in a space. They can’t soundproof a room, only aid in improving sound quality within it.

In a room, sound reflects off surfaces within the space. Some surfaces allow for more reflection than others, and if all surfaces within the room are heavily reflective, it can cause issues such as echo and reverberation. Acoustic panels add a sound absorbing layer to the space, so instead of all sound being reflected, some of it is absorbed by the wall panel.

Wall Panel Installation

Acoustic wall panels can be installed in a variety of ways but the two most popular ways are using a strong adhesive glue (we recommend using PINKGRIP – this can be found on Amazon or at DIY/building stores such as Screwfix and B&Q) or screws. Self-adhesive acoustic panels are also available, these usually involve a peel and stick method of application.

Adhesive Glue

Adhesive glues make installing acoustic panels quick and easy. You simply dab glue across all corners and throughout the middle of the panel, hold against the wall for a minute or so, and you’re done! For extra security, glue can be applied to both the panel and the area of wall application, but this isn’t always necessary.

Screws

Some panels are unsuitable for adhesive glues and therefore need to be screwed into the wall. This method is typically unique to each panel and wall surface, in terms of which screws to use and the number of screws needed.

Self-Adhesive Acoustic Panels

Some acoustic wall panels feature a self-adhesive backing that can be peeled to reveal a sticky surface. Self-adhesive acoustic panels couldn’t be easier to install!

Can You Remove Acoustic Wall Panels?

Most acoustic wall panels are for permanent application, especially when adhesive glues are used, as removal can cause damage to the surface underneath. Screwed in acoustic panels can easily be removed but there of course you will be left with holes in the wall - but a bit of plaster can fix that quick enough!

Consider Placement Before Installing

Before installing your acoustic panels wherever you feel like it, it’s important to think about placement. Acoustic panel placement can alter how effective the panel is at improving acoustics. Byputting your acoustic panels in the right places, you can further enhance your room’s acoustics.
