Soundproofing VS Sound Absorption

A common misconception is that soundproofing and sound absorption are the same thing. Whilst these terms are often used interchangeably (incorrectly) soundproofing and sound absorption are quite different.

What is Soundproofing?

Soundproofing refers to the process of blocking sound, whether it’s blocking sound from entering a room or exiting it (or both!). Materials used for soundproofing need to be dense enough to block sound transference which is why they’re typically solid and heavier.

When is Soundproofing Used?

Some form of soundproofing is usually used in most buildings to comply with sound regulations but extra soundproofing is often required when sound transmission between spaces needs to be reduced further. Noisy neighbours are a very common reason people use soundproofing – if you can hear your neighbour’s TV, music, or arguments, you might need extra soundproofing in your home. In this case, post-building soundproofing solutions will be needed.

How do I Soundproof?

There are several ways to soundproof a room, from wall insulation to acoustic underlay. What you soundproof and the materials you use will entirely depend on; how much soundproofing you need, where you need soundproofing, if you can put materials in/under walls, ceilings, or floors, and your budget.

What is Sound Absorption

Sound absorption is the action of absorbing sound within a space to reduce echo and reverberation and improve the overall sound quality within the room. Sound absorbing products such as acoustic panels don’t soundproof a room, they simply improve the sound quality within it.

How Does Sound Absorption Help and Who Needs it?

Sound absorption is commonly used in areas where sound quality is essential – such as recording studios. It’s also typically used in places that produce a lot of noise or areas with large empty spaces that are prone to suffering from echo.

Do I Need Soundproofing or Sound Absorbing Treatment?

Whether you need soundproofing or sound absorbing treatment depends entirely on what you’re trying to achieve. If you’re wanting to make sure no one from outside a room can hear in, or so when you’re in a room you can’t hear anything outside of it – you need soundproofing. If you’re looking to improve the overall sound quality of your room, especially if there’s too much echo or reverberation – you need acoustic treatment.
