Biophilic Interior Design: What is it and how to Incorporate it

What is Biophilia?

Biophilia is a hypothesis proposed by Edward O. Wilson. The hypothesis suggests that we hold a subconscious desire to have a connection with nature. Because of this, being close to nature can be incredibly beneficial to both our mental and physical wellbeing.

What is Biophilic Interior Design?

Biophilic interior design is about bringing multiple elements of nature indoors. Having a biophilic interior design provides a bright and natural feel to a space that’s perfect for environments that would benefit from a boost of colour and an outdoorsy feel.

Why are Biophilic Interiors Important?

On average, Brits spend 90% of their time indoors which can have a significant negative impact on our health. Studies show that spending at least 120 minutes a week in nature is associated with better health and mental wellbeing.

As a fair share of people work in offices, or other indoors environments, having enough time outdoors isn’t always possible. Luckily, with a biophilic interior design, you can access some of the benefits of nature without having to spend time outside.

Benefits of Biophilic Interior Design

Better Physical Health

Plants, which are a typically used in biophilic interiors, help filter the air and create a natural ventilation by absorbing carbon dioxide and releasing oxygen. This contributes to better physical health, as well as adding colour and vibrancy to the space.

Reduced Stress

One of the biggest advantages to biophilic interior designs is its effect on our mental wellbeing. The mix of light, plants, and general calming nature that a biophilic interior design bring creates a place of serenity that’s successful at reducing stress.

Improved Productivity

The added light, colour, and interesting features of a biophilic interior can create a more inspiring atmosphere that allows for more creativity and productivity. Offices especially will benefit from this, as typical grey walls feel dull and uninspiring and can make it harder for people to feel creative and upbeat.

How to Incorporate Biophilia into Your Interior Design

There are several elements to biophilic interiors, even incorporating just a few can make a considerable difference to your space.

Natural Materials

Using natural materials can give a more authentically natural feel to the space. Opting for materials such as wood, cork, or bamboo not only offers more authenticity but also looks modern, is typically the more sustainable option, and often lasts longer.

Light

Light is a large part of nature, part of having a biophilic interior design is maximising the amount of natural day light the space has. Natural light increases serotonin, making you feel happier and more positive!

Shape

Using forms or shapes that would naturally appear in nature is a subtle way you can add biophilia to an interior. Hexagons are one of the most commonly found shapes in nature and you can easily add this to your décor using hexagon wall panels.

Plants

Plants are typically the first aspect people think of when contemplating ‘natural’ designs. After all, they are one of the most natural elements. Along with the other aspects listed above, plants are the cherry on top when it comes to a biophilic interior design.

Water Features

Connecting and being close to water is another essential natural element in a biophilic interior design. Water features provide both visual and audible elements to a room. Emulating natural waterfalls, water features are calming, beautiful, and even the smallest feature can make a significant impact.

Wall Art

Incorporating natural wall art into your space is a great way of contributing to a biophilic interior design. Using art such as preserved moss walls are a great way to do this. As our moss walls are preserved, they don’t need looking after – so you get most of the advantages of a real plant without having to take care of it!
